DO Slurp Your Noodles, please!

I can't belive that I leave for Japan in THREE WEEKS!! All of your questions have helped me realize how much I have to learn about Japanese schools and life in Japan.

Many of you asked me questions about the language. I do not speak any Japanese, but I am trying to learn some key phrases. For instance, "Konichiwa" means hello, "Domo arigato" means thank you, and "Oishii" means delicious. We will have a translator with our group whenever we are together, but when we are on our own at night we will have to make due ourselves. This is the first time I will be in a country where I won't even recognize the alphabet, which is scary and exciting at the same time! Hopefully I won't get lost walking in the streets. If I do, I guess I just have to hope I run into someone that speaks English...or else I will probably have a pretty interesting story to tell when I get back!

I also think I will have some interesting stories about my experience staying with a host family. From everything I've read, things are very different in Japanese households than they are in most American homes:

1) Before walking into a Japanese home, you need to take off your shoes and put on slippers.
2) If you want to use the bathroom, you need to switch into a different pair of slippers that are just for the bathroom.
3) At meal times, you need to wait for a signal from your host before you begin eating.
4) When you are served rice at the table, you are never supposed to stick your chopsticks right in the middle of the bowl.
5) It is considered rude to suck on the end of your chopsticks and eat or drink while walking.
6) DO slurp your noodles!

There are so many things to remember, I'm sure to make a mistake at some point!

Hey Ms.Brazina!
I have the link you wanted!
http://www.onemanga.com/
It's a very good website. I read all of the updated manga there.
These are my recommendations:
Bleach, it is my favorite out of them all. It's also one of the more popular manga from what I know. So it would be a good start. When you click on Bleach, or any other manga on the website, it gives you a small summary of how the series starts. So no worries!
Naruto, is also one of the more popular manga, this one is my mom's favorite. Haha. The only problem(i think) is that the last half of the second part(it's call Shippuden, which means it would be this in english; Naruto: Hurricane Chronicles)it lost it's touch. The original Naruto, in my opinion, was the best.
Soul Eater, is awesome! It's newer so, it won't overwhelm you with so many chapters!
Death Note is complete, so you won't be left with any cliffhangers! I dislike being left with cliffhangers!
Fullmetal Alchemist is also on there. This one is very good as well.
There are Tokyopop ones I would recommend as well! But you'd have to find these at a book store, Tokyopop does not permit Onemanga to put their copyrighted manga online.
Rozen Maiden, very awesome! It's first series is complete! The second one just started being serialized in Japan.
Trinity Blood, I adore this series! It has regular novels too(the manga and the anime[TV versions of manga and/or novels]series were based off the novels by Sunao Yoshida)There are 2 6 volume novel series. It's about vampires, so depending on your tastes, you might not be into it. But it's worth a try!
Oh! Onemanga also has Vampire Knight! Soul Eater and Vampire Knight are updated monthly and not weekly like the others, so we all have to wait for updates! I don't remember if Fullmetal Alchemist is updated weekly or not. I don't think it's weekly.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask me! I'm glad to help!

That is a very resourceful Naruto website. It has everything you will ever need or want to know!
Oh! This isn't Japanese, but it's a very good show!
Avatar: The Last Airbender! This is the best American 'cartoon' I've seen in a long time! It was on Nickelodeon!

Wow! Thanks for all of the great information, Priscilla! I can't wait to go to Barnes and Noble tomorrow and check out the titles you recommended. I'm also using the music link as a way to motivate myself to get all of my work done this weekend...I'm not letting myself check it out until I've finished everything I have to do :)
